Women typically launch their businesses with significantly less startup capital than men. My extensive research in female entrepreneurship confirms that undercapitalization is a primary reason women-led ventures struggle to achieve higher profitability. Factors contributing to this include:

• Risk aversion leading to lower borrowing and investment-seeking behaviors.
• Perceived or actual biases in funding decisions from venture capitalists and lenders, who are predominantly male.
• Structural barriers that make it harder for women to access traditional financing.

3. Limited Representation in High-Growth Industries

Many women entrepreneurs operate in service-based businesses rather than in high-growth sectors like technology, biotechnology, and energy. These industries generate substantial wealth and scale rapidly, yet they remain male-dominated.

4. Work-Life Balance Constraints

Societal expectations and caregiving responsibilities often impact a woman’s ability to aggressively scale her business. Research indicates that women in high-growth entrepreneurship are more likely to be single or child-free, highlighting the unique challenges faced by mothers and caregivers.

In a time when most things are artificially generated and curated, I am absolutely convinced that authenticity is the new competitive advantage. Eventually, we will become overrun with poorly prompted content in our feeds and on the flip side slick deep fakes. The idea of bringing your full self, unedited and unscripted and unprompted should be one’s value proposition.

Although “more developed” nations may prize the AI prowess, the true winner will be the one who can leverage AI in spaces like our region, where our people are unabashed and want “dey spirit to to tek you” and still retain their humanity. The true prowess will be at the intersection of AI and AS – Artificial Intelligence and the Authentic Self. I am coining this phrase now.

It will be a sort of reverse disruptive innovation. The subculture of authenticity, soon to be buried in the avalanche of AI, shall nibble away at the margins and eventually re-emerge as mainstream. Hear me out. I shall add a caveat. Mainstream in certain niches.

I was a classroom educator in another life and often used the instruction methodology of flipping the classroom, where the resource material is provided, often before the instruction. Students engage with the content in the classroom through problem-solving activities. The goal is to allow experiential engagement with the content, encourage real-time critical thinking and hold student attention. The classroom, in this context, is a safe space for experimentation.

I use the analogy to posit that the entrepreneurship ecosystem should be engineered as a safe space for experimentation. In the Caribbean region, we are obsessed with the ordered, the tidy and the linear when entrepreneurship is anything but that. Our ecosystem stakeholders in the public sector seem not to realize that we must flip the ecosystem and that investing is required for testing and obtaining proof of concept. Instead, they require proof of concept without providing a safe space for experimentation and the required resources to build a minimum viable product or service. This is one of the many reasons we have a proliferation of micro-enterprises and a dearth of medium to large businesses in emerging industries.

Perhaps our obsession with the linear is the natural consequence of our colonial past when the ordered and the bureaucratic were presented to us as proof of civility. The obsession is trapping us, stymieing our economies and dampening our earning potential.
