When 13 year-old Logan LaPlante grows up, he wants to be happy and healthy. He discusses how hacking his education is helping him achieve this goal. About TE…
This TED talk really resonated with me. I like this young man also believe in hack schooling. I believe in breaking the mold of the traditional, conventional classroom, as this new world in which we live is hardly traditional or conventional. As a mom who has decided to remove my own children from traditional schooling and as an edu-entrepreneur – I too have had to field those questions from those who believe in the “system”. My daughter deals with it well (she is in an online school), when asked why she isn’t in class by random adults she says “I have a sick day”. Smile. I have since thought why should we feel as if we are doing something wrong? Perhaps not the norm (and I think this will soon change) but surely not anything wrong! What could be wrong about wanting your children to experience the world to, be different and creative, to view the world through a different lens, to develop self reliance and engage with the world on their own terms.
When we stifle difference, creativity and experimentation we all lose – society loses. Why? Well what leader, innovator, billionaire or inventor do you know who accepted the conventional, the traditional? None!
My final word on this is – I don’t question your love of the box – so don’t question my desire to be unconfined. Leave me alone – I am busy preparing my children for the not too distant future and you are getting on my nerves!
